Author: Mother Goose. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham.
Title: Mother Goose. The Old Nursery Rhymes.
Publisher: London, William Heinemann, 1913.
Language: Text in English.
Size: 8 x 6 inches.
Pages: xi-159 pages.
Binding: Very good later three-quarter leather binding, green morocco spine and corners over cloth boards, one raised band to the spine, decorated in an Arts & Crafts–inspired floral gilt design (hinges fine, overall slightly scuffed - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. Top edge gilt. The binding is firm and attractive, with light sunning to the boards and minor rubbing to extremities, consistent with age and use.

Illustrations: Illustrated by Arthur Rackham with 13 full-page color plates (including frontispiece, with captioned tissue guards), numerous black-and-white drawings throughout the text, and decorative silhouettes on the title page and within the layout.

Estimate: (USD 500–600).

The book: Published in 1913, Mother Goose. The Old Nursery Rhymes is one of Arthur Rackham’s most beloved illustrated books and a cornerstone of Golden Age children’s literature. Issued by William Heinemann, the volume brings together the traditional nursery rhymes of Mother Goose with Rackham’s unmistakable visual language—at once playful, poetic, and faintly uncanny. This later printing, preserved in an elegant Arts & Crafts–style leather binding and retaining the original publisher’s cloth elements, offers a refined balance between collectability and aesthetic presence.

The illustrator: Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) stands among the greatest illustrators of the Golden Age of British illustration. Renowned for his expressive pen-and-ink line, imaginative characterizations, and subtle use of color, Rackham redefined illustrated books for both children and adults. His illustrations for Mother Goose are among his most iconic and enduring works, capturing the timeless charm and darker undertones of traditional nursery rhymes.
