The illustrator: Albert Edward Jackson (1873-1952) was an English illustrator and watercolorist known for his picturesque depictions of landscapes, rural scenes, and architectural studies. Born on December 11, 1873, in London, England, Jackson developed a passion for art at a young age and went on to study at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London.
Jackson's artistic style was characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and a keen sense of observation. He often chose idyllic rural settings for his illustrations and watercolors, capturing the beauty and tranquility of the English countryside with remarkable precision. His work was influenced by the late 19th-century Romantic movement, with its focus on the harmony between nature and humanity.
Throughout his career, Jackson contributed illustrations to numerous magazines, books, and other publications. The period between 1910 and 1920 marked the peak of Jackson’s career. As well as contributing extensively to a number of children’s comics, including Tiger Tim’s Weekly and The Rainbow, including a weekly ‘Bonnie Bluebell’ feature, and many spot illustrations for prose stories.
Jackson also illustrated bestselling editions of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (1914), Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1915), Tales From Shakespeare (1919), Charles Kingsley’s The Water Babies (1920), Tales from the Arabian Nights (1920) and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1921).
