Binding: Near fine. Original blue cloth binding with elaborate gilt decoration to the front board and spine, with mounted colour illustration to the upper cover. Binding remains bright, firm, and highly attractive.
Dust jacket: Very good. Original illustrated dust jacket with matching mounted-style cover illustration and green decorative borders. Light toning and minor wear, with small chips to the spine ends and corners, as shown.
Content: Near fine. Clean and bright throughout, with a small bookseller’s stamp on the rear endpaper.
Illustrations: Complete with 8 colour illustrations by Maxwell Armfield, including the frontispiece, “A big three-masted ship lay close by.” Other plates accompany tales such as The Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Garden of Paradise, The Flying Trunk, and The Travelling Companions.

The book: A beautiful early illustrated edition of Andersen’s fairy tales from the “Tales for Children from Many Lands” series, edited by F. C. Tilney. This volume gathers some of Andersen’s best-loved stories, including The Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Hans Clodhopper, The Swineherd, The Garden of Paradise, The Tinder-Box, The Flying Trunk, and The Travelling Companions. Especially appealing in its richly gilt pictorial binding and surviving original dust jacket, both featuring the same mounted colour illustration.

The illustrator: Maxwell Armfield was a British artist, illustrator, and designer associated with the Arts and Crafts tradition. His colour illustrations here bring a refined decorative quality to Andersen’s tales, combining fairy-tale atmosphere with delicate composition and soft, luminous colour.
