The book: Scarce and Nice edition of Blanche McManus' illustrations for the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám --Edward FitzGerald's translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048–1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. A ruba'i is a two-line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubayot (derived from the Arabic language root for "four"), meaning "quatrains".
The illustrator: Blanche McManus (1869–1935) was an American writer and artist. She and her husband, Milburg Francisco Mansfield wrote a series of illustrated travel books, many of which included information about automobiles which were new at the time. Her work is included in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The author: Omar Khayyam (18 May 1048 – 4 December 1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet.
As a mathematician, he is most notable for his work on the classification and solution of cubic equations, where he provided geometric solutions by the intersection of conics. As an astronomer, he composed a calendar which proved to be a more accurate computation of time than that proposed five centuries later by Pope Gregory XIII.
