The book: A First Edition illustrated by Dorothy P. Lathrop of The Princess and Curdie, George MacDonald’s 1883 sequel to The Princess and the Goblin. In this tale, Curdie, the miner boy, is summoned by the old princess to undertake a quest filled with danger, magic, and moral lessons. This 1927 Macmillan edition brings the story vividly to life through the illustrations of Dorothy P. Lathrop, whose striking Art Deco-influenced black-and-white work heightens the tale’s atmosphere of mystery and wonder.

The author: George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister who greatly influenced later fantasy writers such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. His fairy tales and fantasies, particularly The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie, combine Christian allegory with rich imaginative storytelling.

The illustrator: Dorothy Pulis Lathrop (1891–1980) was a distinguished American illustrator and author of children's books. Known for her ethereal and detailed drawings, Lathrop was the recipient of the inaugural Caldecott Medal in 1938. Her illustrations for The Princess and Curdie demonstrate her signature ability to blend beauty, fantasy, and psychological depth, making this edition a visual and literary treasure.
