The book: Sonnet from the Portuguese is one of the most celebrated sequences of love poetry in the English language. Written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning during her courtship with fellow poet Robert Browning, the poems trace an intimate emotional journey from doubt and suffering to profound love and devotion. First published in 1850, the sequence quickly became famous for its lyrical intensity and sincerity, particularly the immortal Sonnet XLIII beginning with the famous line “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”

This scarce Florentine edition, printed by Giulio Giannini & Son, reflects the tradition of fine Italian artisanal bookmaking. Giannini’s workshop, located near the Piazza Pitti, was known for producing small, elegant volumes with hand-decorated vellum bindings inspired by Renaissance craftsmanship. The delicate painted design and restrained typography give this edition the charm of a handcrafted object rather than a purely commercial book.

The author: Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861) was one of the most admired poets of the Victorian era. Despite a life marked by fragile health and personal difficulties, she achieved remarkable literary success. Her poetry combines emotional intensity with intellectual depth, often addressing themes of love, social justice, spirituality, and human dignity. Her secret courtship and later marriage to Robert Browning became one of the most famous literary romances of the nineteenth century, immortalized in the Sonnets from the Portuguese.
