The book: First published in 1932 by the P. F. Volland Company, Raggedy Ann’s Lucky Pennies is one of the later classic adventures of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy, the beloved rag dolls who became icons of American children’s literature in the early twentieth century. Printed in Volland’s distinctive style with vivid color illustrations and decorative page layouts, the story follows Raggedy Ann’s search for her lucky penny through a series of whimsical encounters with characters such as Noodles the donkey and other fanciful figures. Copies preserved with their original publisher’s box are increasingly difficult to find today, particularly when accompanied by the charming Volland promotional bookmark.

The author / illustrator: Johnny Gruelle (1880–1938) was an American artist, political cartoonist, and children’s book creator whose invention of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy became one of the most enduring icons of American childhood. Inspired by a rag doll discovered by his daughter Marcella, Gruelle first introduced Raggedy Ann in 1918, combining gentle moral lessons with humor and imagination. His distinctive illustration style—simple, warm, and expressive—perfectly complemented the playful spirit of his stories and helped establish the Raggedy Ann series as a cornerstone of early twentieth-century American children’s literature.
