The book: A delightful early American illustrated edition of Pinocchio, richly interpreted for the first time by Maud and Miska Petersham — one of the most celebrated husband-and-wife illustration teams of the 20th century, later winners of the Caldecott Medal. Their color work brings humor, energy, and emotional warmth to Collodi’s classic tale. Copies from the 1930s are commonly found without the jacket; those retaining the original pictorial dustjacket in collectible condition, as here, are significantly scarcer and sought after by Petersham collectors.
The illustrators: Maud (1890–1971) and Miska Petersham (1888–1960) were pioneers of modern American children’s book illustration. Renowned for their vibrant color palettes, expressive characters, and decorative sense, they shaped the visual culture of children’s books for decades. Their Pinocchio artwork remains one of their most charming and enduring contributions.
