The book: A handsomely bound and complete three-volume edition of Leo Tolstoy's monumental novel War and Peace, translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude. Published by Oxford University Press in the esteemed "The World's Classics" series, this edition preserves one of the most celebrated English translations of Tolstoy's work. Its finely preserved leather binding and historical significance make it both a collector’s item and a distinguished reading copy.

The author: Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828–1910), better known as Leo Tolstoy, is one of the giants of Russian literature. His War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1878) stand among the greatest novels ever written, exploring deep philosophical themes within sweeping historical settings. Tolstoy’s influence extended far beyond literature, inspiring thinkers and leaders from Mahatma Gandhi to Martin Luther King Jr.

The translators: Louise and Aylmer Maude were personal acquaintances of Tolstoy and his family. Their translations, particularly of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are praised for their fidelity to the original texts and clarity in English. Aylmer Maude also contributed significant biographical and introductory material, giving added scholarly weight to these editions.
