The book: A beautiful signed First Edition of Charles van Sandwyk’s After Glow, an enchanting autumnal poem in which the fading light of the season gives way to a secret world of elfin revelry. Fairies, insects, woodland creatures and fantastical figures gather among autumn leaves, berries and flowers as evening settles over the landscape. The book is an especially appealing example of van Sandwyk’s work as both artist and book-maker: its intimate format, calligraphic text, delicate coloring, gilt decoration, silk ties and ingenious folding panorama transform the poem into a miniature theatrical experience. Published by the artist’s own Fairy Press in an edition of 2,000 copies, After Glow beautifully captures the warmth, humour and gentle otherworldliness for which his books are admired.
The author and illustrator: Charles van Sandwyk (b. 1966) is a Canadian artist, writer and book illustrator celebrated for his exquisitely detailed depictions of fairies, animals, insects and imaginary woodland societies. Born in Johannesburg and raised in British Columbia, he draws inspiration from the great illustrators of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries while maintaining an unmistakably personal visual language. His books are notable for their calligraphy, decorative typography, fine papers and inventive structures, and his work has attracted an international following among collectors of illustrated and private-press books. Van Sandwyk has also illustrated celebrated editions for the Folio Society while continuing to produce intimate publications through his own Fairy Press.
