The author and illustrator: Charles van Sandwyk is a Canadian artist and author renowned for his whimsical illustrations and finely crafted books. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1966, he moved to Vancouver at a young age. Influenced by early 20th-century illustrators, his work evokes nostalgia and enchantment, often depicting animals, fairies, and idyllic natural scenes. Widely collected, he has also illustrated notable editions for publishers such as the Folio Society. He divides his time between British Columbia and a remote Fijian island, whose tranquillity deeply informs his artistic vision.
