The book: Yours Truly is a reflective and exquisitely crafted artist’s book by Charles van Sandwyk, one of Canada’s most beloved contemporary book illustrators and fine press bookmakers. This handmade volume offers a poetic glimpse into van Sandwyk’s inner world—his artistic origin story, influences, and gentle philosophies of life, nature, and the creative spirit. Part memoir, part fairy tale, and entirely art object, Yours Truly stands as both personal expression and miniature gallery. Its small limitation and charming presentation ensure its desirability among collectors of fine press and book arts.
The author: Charles van Sandwyk (b. 1966) was born in South Africa and emigrated to Canada in 1977. Widely known for his luminous illustrations of fairy tales and his handmade books, he draws deeply on natural history, folklore, and a bygone aesthetic tradition. After studying art in British Columbia, he began a prolific career creating illustrated books, fine press volumes, and artworks blending whimsy with exquisite craftsmanship. His collaborations with the Folio Society and his independent Fairy Press productions have earned him a dedicated international following.
The illustrator: All illustrations are by van Sandwyk himself, a master of the finely detailed watercolor and pen technique reminiscent of Beardsley, Rackham, and Dulac. His works are filled with anthropomorphic animals, fairies, gnomes, and poetic charm. Yours Truly features multiple self-referential images—visual portraits of both the artist as a young man and his imagined companions at the Fairy Press—making it a deeply personal and meta-illustrative work.
